What Is the Present Simple Tense?

This is the tense you’ll use more than any other as a beginner. It talks about things that are always true, habits you repeat, and things that happen on a schedule — not what’s happening right this second.

🔁 A habit
“I drink tea every morning.” — something you do again and again.Kuch aisa jo aap baar baar karte hain

✅ A fact
“Water boils at 100°C.” — always true, no matter the day.Hamesha sach — kabhi nahi badalta

🗓️ A schedule
“The train leaves at 6 PM.” — fixed, planned, repeats regularly.Fix time par hota hai — roz ya har hafte

The One Rule That Changes Everything: “He/She/It” Gets an Extra “S”

The verb itself barely changes — except for one subject group. Compare these carefully.

🙋I / YOU / WE / THEY
I work. You work. We work. They work.
Plain verb, no changes at all — this is the easy group.

👤HE / SHE / IT
He works. She works. It works.
Add “-s” to the verb — this is the group almost everyone forgets.

Spelling rules for adding “-s” — it’s not always just “+s”

+

Most verbs: just add -s — work → works, eat → eats.
Verbs ending in s, x, z, ch, sh: add -es — watch → watches, wash → washes, fix → fixes.
Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to -ies — study → studies, try → tries.
Irregular: have → has, go → goes, do → does.
Zyaadatar verbs mein sirf “-s” lagta hai, lekin s/x/z/ch/sh se khatam hone waale verbs mein “-es” lagta hai, aur consonant+y waale verbs mein “y” ko “ies” se badla jaata hai.

Negative — “don’t” and “doesn’t”

+

I/You/We/They + don’t + verb — “I don’t work on Sundays.”
He/She/It + doesn’t + verb (no “-s” here — “doesn’t” already carries it) — “She doesn’t work on Sundays.”
He/She/It ke saath “doesn’t” use hone par verb mein “-s” nahi lagta, kyunki “doesn’t” khud hi woh kaam kar deta hai.

Questions — “do” and “does”

+

I/You/We/They: Do + subject + verb? — “Do you work on Sundays?”
He/She/It: Does + subject + verb? — “Does she work on Sundays?” (again, no “-s” on the verb).
Question banate waqt bhi He/She/It ke saath “does” use hota hai aur verb plain rehta hai.

Build Your Own Sentences

Say each one out loud before tapping to check — this is the real practice, not just reading.

She / watch / TV / every evening
She watches TV every evening.

Notice “watch” → “watches” — it ends in “ch,” so it takes “-es.”

They / not / like / coffee
They don’t like coffee.

“They” is in the easy group, so it’s just “don’t,” no “-s” anywhere.

he / study / English / on weekends? (question)
Does he study English on weekends?

“Does” carries the “-s,” so “study” stays plain — not “studies” here.

Now try these yourself (answers below, don’t peek early)

1. He ___ (go) to the gym every morning.
2. My sister ___ (not / eat) meat.
3. ___ your parents ___ (live) in Delhi?

Check your answers

+

1. He goes to the gym every morning.
2. My sister doesn’t eat meat.
3. Do your parents live in Delhi?
Pehle mein “go” → “goes” (He ke saath), doosre mein “doesn’t” (verb plain rehta hai), teesre mein “your parents” (“they” jaisa hai) isliye “do” use hoga, “does” nahi.
The mistake almost every beginner makes

Forgetting the “-s” with He/She/It

“He work in Delhi” is one of the most common errors — because in Hindi, the verb doesn’t change based on gender the same way. In English, this one small “-s” is often the difference between sounding like a beginner and sounding fluent.

हिंदी सारांश (Hindi Transcript)

इस पाठ में हमने सीखा — Present Simple Tense का उपयोग आदतों (habits), सच्चाइयों (facts), और समय-सारणी (schedule) के लिए होता है। इसकी सबसे ज़रूरी बात यह है कि He, She, It के साथ verb में “-s” या “-es” जोड़ा जाता है — जैसे “work” से “works”, और “watch” से “watches” (क्योंकि यह “ch” से खत्म होता है)। I, You, We, They के साथ verb बिना किसी बदलाव के इस्तेमाल होता है।

नकारात्मक (negative) वाक्य बनाने के लिए I/You/We/They के साथ “don’t” और He/She/It के साथ “doesn’t” का प्रयोग होता है — और ध्यान रहे, “doesn’t” के बाद verb में “-s” नहीं लगता, क्योंकि “-s” पहले ही “doesn’t” में आ चुका है। सवाल (question) बनाने के लिए भी यही नियम लागू होता है — I/You/We/They के साथ “Do”, और He/She/It के साथ “Does”।

सबसे आम गलती यह है कि लोग He/She/It के साथ “-s” लगाना भूल जाते हैं — जैसे “He work” कहना, जबकि सही रूप है “He works”। इस एक छोटे से नियम को याद रखने से आपकी अंग्रेज़ी बहुत ज़्यादा स्वाभाविक (natural) सुनाई देने लगेगी।
