How this word actually lands

“Chit-chat” is understandable and used in British English, particularly in informal conversation. The important point is register. It describes light, informal conversation and therefore does not belong naturally in formal workplace writing. You could say, “We had a bit of chit-chat before the meeting,” and nobody would find that unusual. But an email saying “Let's have some chit-chat about the project” would sound deliberately casual and possibly humorous. In a professional context, “a quick chat” is normally more natural. This is a useful distinction for Indian English learners because a word can be completely acceptable in spoken English while becoming noticeably informal when transferred into an email or report.
