How this word actually lands
“Small world!” is a fixed social expression in British English. It is normally used when you unexpectedly discover a connection between yourself and another person—perhaps you know the same person, went to the same place, or have some other surprising connection. It is not normally used simply to say that the world is small. For example, if someone says, “I used to work with your brother,” a natural response could be, “Small world!” The expression works because of the unexpected connection. If you use it without that kind of discovery, it can sound unnatural. This is therefore less about vocabulary and more about recognising the social situation in which a fixed expression actually belongs.
Example Sentences
“You know Sarah too? Small world!”
"तुम भी सारा को जानते हो? दुनिया कितनी छोटी है!"
“It's a small world — we went to the same school.”
दुनिया छोटी है — हम एक ही स्कूल में गए थे।
⚠ Common Mistake
Always used as an exclamation about coincidence, not literally describing the size of the planet.
