“The man who called you is my brother” — यहाँ “who called you” यह बताता है कौन सा आदमी (कोई comma नहीं, ज़रूरी जानकारी)। “My brother, who called you, is a doctor” — यहाँ “who called you” सिर्फ़ अतिरिक्त जानकारी है (comma के साथ), भाई की पहचान के लिए ज़रूरी नहीं क्योंकि “my brother” ख़ुद ही स्पष्ट है।

The man who called you is my brother.
My brother, who called you, is a doctor.

“My students who work hard succeed” का मतलब है सिर्फ़ वे students जो मेहनत करते हैं, कामयाब होते हैं (बाकी नहीं)। “My students, who work hard, succeed” का मतलब है सारे students मेहनत करते हैं, और सब कामयाब होते हैं।

The Sentence Machine: subject type decides the pronoun
The man who called you is my brother.

“That” defining clauses में who और which दोनों की जगह ले सकता है — पर non-defining clauses में कभी नहीं।

Pronoun
who
लोग (subject)
the woman who spoke
whom
लोग (object, formal)
the woman whom I met
which
the book which I bought
that
the book that I bought
whose
possession (लोग/चीज़ें)
the man whose car broke down

Non-Defining comma

The girl who won the award is my friend.
This is the house that my grandfather built.
Defining, चीज़ के लिए “that” या “which”।
My father, who is 60, still works.
The man whose car broke down is our neighbour.
“whose” possession दिखाता है।

⏳ Object clauses में who/which/that पूरी तरह ग़ायब हो सकता है

Omission Formula

Object relative clause + defining = pronoun optional। Subject relative clause = pronoun हमेशा ज़रूरी

“The book (that) I bought is great” — “that” हटाया जा सकता है, क्योंकि “I” already subject है, “book” object है। पर “The man who called is my brother” में “who” कभी नहीं हटाया जा सकता, क्योंकि यहाँ “who” ख़ुद clause का subject है।

The book (that) I bought is great. ✓ pronoun
The man who called is my brother. ✗ pronoun
यहाँ “who” ख़ुद clause का subject है (“who called”) — subject कभी नहीं हट सकता।

Everyday Very Formal
the person who I was talking to → the person to whom I was talking
the team that we worked with → the team with whom we worked
the issue that we discussed → the issue about which we spoke
Formal: Preposition + whom / which
The client for whom we prepared the report was satisfied.

Native writers अक्सर पूरे relative clause (“who is”, “which was”) को एक participle (V-ing या V3) में समेट देते हैं।

Reduction Formula

who/which + is/was + V-ing → सिर्फ़ V-ing। who/which + is/was + V3 (passive) → सिर्फ़ V3

“The man who is standing there” → “The man standing there”। “The report that was written last week” → “The report written last week”।

Full: The man who is standing there is my boss.
Reduced: The man standing there is my boss.
Full: The report that was written last week needs review.
Reduced: The report written last week needs review.
Full Clause Reduced
employees who are working → employees working on this project
data that was collected → data collected yesterday
people who were present → people present at the meeting
🧠 Memory Anchor

, who / , whichtap
My father, who is 60, still works.
thattap
The book that I bought.
(pronoun) hiddentap
The book (that) I bought.
reduced -ing/V3tap
who/which+is हटाकर participleFormal, compact writingThe man standing there.

→ My father, ___ is 60, still works.
Non-defining clause में “that” कभी इस्तेमाल नहीं होता, “who” चाहिए।
“The book that I bought is great” में “that” हटाया जा सकता है क्योंकि…
“The man who is standing there” को reduce करने पर सही रूप कौन सा है?
Active meaning — “who is” हटाकर सिर्फ़ V-ing (standing) रहता है।

2
फॉर्मूला: who (लोग), which (चीज़ें), that (दोनों, सिर्फ़ defining में), whose (possession)।
3
5
Reduced clauses: who/which+is/was
