🔎 Literary writing
“She was sad” telling है — यह पाठक को कुछ करने नहीं देता, सिर्फ़ जानकारी देता है। “She stared at the empty chair, unable to eat” showing है — पाठक ख़ुद समझ जाता है कि वह दुखी है, बिना शब्द “sad” पढ़े।
वह बहुत खुश थी। (Telling)She grinned so wide her cheeks ached, and she couldn’t stop checking her phone. (Showing)
कमरा गन्दा था। (Telling)Dust coated every surface, and yesterday’s plate still sat on the windowsill, a fly circling it. (Showing)
⚠️
एक ज़रूरी सावधानी
“Show, Don’t Tell” का मतलब यह नहीं कि “was/is” या adjectives कभी इस्तेमाल न करें — कभी-कभी बताना ही सही रास्ता है, ख़ासकर छोटी details या speed चाहिए तब। असली नियम यह है: emotional और महत्वपूर्ण पलों में showing इस्तेमाल करें, routine जानकारी में telling चलती है। हर वाक्य को showing में बदलने की कोशिश पढ़ने को भारी बना देती है।

फॉर्मूला
🧩 Show, Don’t Tell कैसे लिखें — तीन रास्ते
Showing कोई magic नहीं है — यह तीन specific तरीक़ों से आती है: concrete sensory detail (जो देखा/सुना/महसूस किया जा सके), physical action (शरीर क्या करता है), और specific, precise nouns (vague शब्दों की जगह exact चीज़)।
The Sentence Machine: three roads from telling to showing
तीनों रास्ते एक ही जगह पहुँचते हैं — पाठक ख़ुद महसूस करता है, आपको बताना नहीं पड़ता।
Abstract word → concrete detail + physical action + specific noun
“The old wooden table” instead of “the furniture.” “He clenched his jaw” instead of “he was angry.”
जितना specific noun, उतनी तस्वीर पाठक के दिमाग़ में साफ़ बनती है।

Sentence Rhythm
⏳ Sentence की length ख़ुद एक tool है
Beginner writers सारे sentences एक जैसी length में लिखते हैं — इससे लेखन flat और unवारying लगता है। Skilled writers जान-बूझकर length बदलते हैं: छोटे sentences tension और speed बनाते हैं, लंबे sentences flow और calm बनाते हैं।
Rhythm Formula
Tense/urgent moment → छोटे, टूटे हुए sentences। Calm/reflective moment → लंबे, बहते हुए sentences
Action scene में तीन शब्दों का sentence भी पूरी तरह सही है: “He ran. Fast. Faster.” पर एक शांत, यादों वाले scene में लंबे, घुमावदार sentences बेहतर काम करते हैं।
Tense pacing: “The door creaked. She froze. Footsteps. Closer.”
छोटे sentences पढ़ने की speed को धीमा कर देते हैं — हर वाक्य के बाद एक साँस, जो tension बढ़ाती है।
Fragments (“Footsteps. Closer.”) जान-बूझकर grammar तोड़ते हैं, effect के लिए — creative writing में यह allowed है, formal writing में नहीं।
Calm pacing: “The afternoon stretched on quietly, the kind of stillness that made the whole street feel like it was holding its breath, waiting for something that never quite arrived.”
लंबा, बहता sentence शांति और समय की धीमी रफ़्तार को खुद महसूस कराता है।
यह sentence की length ख़ुद content को reflect करती है — form, meaning को support कर रहा है।

Point of View
🚫 सबसे common beginner ग़लती — POV बीच में बदलना
Point of View (POV) यह तय करता है पाठक कहानी किसकी आँखों से देख रहा है। सबसे common advanced-level ग़लती “head-hopping” है — एक ही paragraph में एक से ज़्यादा character के दिमाग़ में घुसना, बिना संकेत दिए। इससे पाठक confuse हो जाता है और भावनात्मक जुड़ाव टूट जाता है।
POV Discipline Formula
एक scene, एक POV। अगर POV बदलना ज़रूरी है, तो नए section/paragraph break से साफ़ संकेत दें
ग़लत: “Priya smiled, relieved. Across the room, Raj felt a flicker of doubt he couldn’t explain.” — यह एक ही पल में दो अलग दिमाग़ों में घुसता है। सही: सिर्फ़ एक character की भावना दिखाएँ, दूसरे की सिर्फ़ बाहरी बात (उसका चेहरा, हरकत)।
POV Type
क्या दिखता है
असर
First Person
सिर्फ़ “I” के विचार/भावनाएँ
बहुत intimate, पर सीमित जानकारी
Third Limited
सिर्फ़ एक character के विचार, बाकी सब बाहर से
Balance — intimate भी, flexible भी
Third Omniscient
सारे characters के विचार, narrator सबसे ऊपर
बड़ी scope, पर कम intimate — control करना मुश्किल

Dialogue Craft
💬 अच्छा dialogue वह नहीं जो characters सीधे कहते हैं — subtext में है
Beginner dialogue अक्सर बहुत सीधा होता है — characters exactly वही कहते हैं जो वे महसूस करते हैं। Real और skilled dialogue subtext इस्तेमाल करता है — character जो नहीं कह रहा, वह भी उतना ही ज़रूरी है जितना जो कह रहा है।
Too Direct (weak)→Subtext (strong)
“I’m angry that you forgot my birthday.”
“Oh, you remembered to come. That’s nice.” (sarcasm hides the hurt)
“I love you and I’m scared to lose you.”
“Just… text me when you land, okay?” (fear hidden in a small request)
Dialogue Tag Formula
ज़्यादातर जगह “said” काफ़ी है — action beats इस्तेमाल करें, exotic tags (“exclaimed,” “expostulated”) से बचें
“Get out!” she shouted angrily — कमज़ोर, क्योंकि “shouted” और “angrily” दोनों एक ही बात दो बार कहते हैं। बेहतर: “Get out.” She pointed at the door, her hand steady. — action ख़ुद ग़ुस्सा दिखाता है, बताने की ज़रूरत नहीं।
7
Imagery & Metaphor
✨ पुराने metaphors पाठक को सोने पर मजबूर कर देते हैं
“Heart of gold,” “cold as ice,” “time flew by” — ये metaphors इतनी बार इस्तेमाल हो चुके हैं कि पाठक का दिमाग़ अब उन्हें पढ़ता ही नहीं, सिर्फ़ recognize करके आगे बढ़ जाता है। असली sophisticated writing अपने specific, unexpected comparisons ढूँढती है, जो पाठक को रुकने पर मजबूर करें।
Cliché→Fresh
“Time flew by.”
“The hours slipped past like sand through a fist that wouldn’t stop trying to close.”
“Her eyes sparkled like diamonds.”
“Her eyes had the particular shine of someone about to cry and refusing to.”
“He had a heart of gold.”
“He gave away his lunch so often the other kids stopped offering to share theirs — they knew he’d just say no and hand it over anyway.”
8
याद रखने का तरीका
🧠 Memory Anchor
“नाम मत बताओ, सबूत दो — पाठक ख़ुद निष्कर्ष निकाल लेगा।”
हर emotional sentence लिखने के बाद पूछो: “क्या मैंने भावना का नाम बताया (sad, angry) या उसका सबूत (कँपते हाथ, टूटी आवाज़)?” नाम की जगह सबूत चुनो। Sentence rhythm के लिए: tense पल छोटे sentences, शांत पल लंबे sentences।
