Increment
Meaning
A regular increase in salary, usually given once a year.
हिंदी मेंवेतन में नियमित वृद्धि, आमतौर पर वर्ष में एक बार दी जाती है।
How this word actually lands
In a British workplace nobody asks about their "increment". They say pay rise, or just rise. The word exists in British English but lives in maths and engineering, not HR, so a manager hearing "when is my increment due?" understands you but registers the phrasing as unusual — one of the clearest markers of Indian English at work.
Use pay rise when speaking and salary review in writing. Note also that the annual across-the-board increase common in Indian companies often doesn't exist in British firms, where rises are usually individual and negotiated. The vocabulary differs because the system does.
"The first time I said 'increment' in a London meeting, my manager understood me — he just paused, because he'd never heard anyone say it."
Example Sentences
