Appraisal
Meaning
a formal assessment of an employee's performance, usually done annually
हिंदी मेंकार्य-मूल्यांकन
How this word actually lands
In Indian workplaces, “appraisal” is a very familiar word for the yearly discussion about your performance and salary. In Britain, the word is understood, but “performance review” or simply “review” is often more natural in workplace conversation. “Appraisal” can also be used in other contexts, so it does not always sound as specifically connected with an employee's annual review as it does in India. In a British office, I would say, “When is my performance review?” or “I have my review next week.” In formal writing, “annual performance review” is particularly clear. The difference is small, but using the more usual workplace expression makes your English sound less translated.
Example Sentences
“My appraisal is scheduled for next Friday.”
मेरा कार्य-मूल्यांकन अगले शुक्रवार को होना तय है।
⚠ Common Mistake
Misspelled as "apprisal" or "appraisel" — correct spelling has "ai" before "sal."
