Token Number

/ˈtəʊkən ˈnʌmbə/ noun

Meaning

How this word actually lands

“Token number” is a useful example of an expression that makes immediate sense in many Indian public-service situations but does not have a direct British equivalent. In India, you may receive a token number and wait until that number is called for a service. In Britain, the system is usually described according to the particular setting. You might be given a ticket, queue number or reference number, or simply be asked to wait in a queue. So asking a British colleague, “What is my token number?” may require explanation. A clearer question would be, “Do I have a queue number?” or “Is there a ticket number I need to wait for?” The important point is that the Indian system and the British system are not always organised in exactly the same way.

Example Sentences

“Please take a token number and wait to be called.”

कृपया एक टोकन नंबर लें और बुलाए जाने का इंतज़ार करें।

“My token number is forty-two.”

मेरा टोकन नंबर बयालीस है।

⚠ Common Mistake

Common in Indian offices, banks and hospitals — less common terminology in British English, which more often just says "queue number".
