How this word actually lands

“Queue” is one of the strongest British-English words on this list. British speakers normally say “queue” where American English commonly uses “line.” “Are you in the queue?” and “We had to queue for twenty minutes” are completely ordinary British expressions. There is also a useful grammatical difference: “queue” can be a noun and a verb. You can “join the queue,” “be in the queue,” or “queue for a ticket.” In Britain, queuing is also a familiar part of everyday social behaviour, so the word appears in many ordinary situations—shops, buses, stations and public services. If you are aiming specifically for British English, “queue” is much more useful than trying to avoid it in favour of “line.”
